What and Why is ALFA?

ALFA, though based in the UK, is an international organisation.

(We have members from every continent bar Antarctica)

ALFA was formed on 20th May 1995 shortly before the second Low Flow Symposium held in Manchester.

Its aims are to promote:

* * * the use and understanding of methods of inhalational anaesthesia involving recirculation of exhaled gases and reduced fresh gas input.

* * * the education of all anaesthetists in those aspects of inhalational anaesthesia in particular those relevant to low flow anaesthesia.

* * * research in the field of low flow anaesthesia.

This strange address is necessary because the old "freeserve.alfanaes" was rendered unusable

by the spam resulting from having valid links to my mailbox on the site.

The background to this page is Stephen Hales' apparatus from the early 18th Century.  He noted that the addition of caustic soda to the canvas bag of his resuscitator delayed the onset of asphyxia.  He recognised the harmful effect of exhaled "sulphurous vapours".     Black discovered carbon dioxide some four decades later.
